Qaboos bin Syed al-Sa’id, the Sultan of Oman, the longest-ruling ruler in the Arab world, passed away at the age of 79, after which Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur was appointed as the new Sultan of Oman. He is is his first cousin. Sultan Qaboos was unmarried and has no successors.
Former Minister of Culture and Heritage Haitham bin Tariq has sworn in after a meeting of the royal family council on Saturday.
Earlier in a statement issued from the royal court it was said: “With great sorrow and deep grief … The royal court regrets the death of King Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who died on Friday. ‘
Sultan Qaboos returned home from Belgium last month after undergoing medical examination and treatment. He was reported to have cancer.
