Salahuddin whose video had gone viral on social media last month, died of physical and mental anguish at the hands of the Rahim Yar Khan police, proposed a forensic examination of the samples collected from his body.
In the CCTV footage that went viral, Salahuddin Ayubi was seen sticking his tongue out at the camera while robbing an ATM in Faisalabad last month. He was in detention for a robbery in Rahim Yar Khan some two weeks ago.
A day after being arrested, the Rahim Yar Khan police declared that Salahuddin suddenly became unwell and died while in their custody. However, Salahuddin’s father, Mohammad Afzaal, claimed his son was brutally tortured.
After a social media campaign and the rise of voices in favor of the victim, the Government took notice of the case and established an Investigation team to address the issue.
Samples from Salahuddin’s body were sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) for examination. It has been confirmed in the report that Salahuddin was subjected to both physical and mental torture, the report said.
On the basis of the PFSA report, a medical board, led by Sheikh Zayed Hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Ghulam Rabbani, said that it was of “common opinion” that the torture marks on Salahuddin’s body were “antemortem (occurring before death) in nature & caused by blunt means — confirming antemortem physical violence.”
“Possibility of death due to combined effects of antemortem injuries mentioned in the post-mortem report, inhalation abuse, restrictive lung disease & neurogenic shock cannot be ruled out,” Report said.
