A lady has given birth to the world’s first baby to be born from a procedure which combines the Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) of three persons.
The baby boy was born on 6 April after his Jordanian parents, who had already suffered the death of two children from a genetic disorder, travelled to Mexico to see US fertility specialists, led by John Zhang of the New Hope Fertility Centre in New York .
Whilst many welcomed news of the birth, some raised concerns that the doctors had left America to perform the procedure beyond the reach of any regulatory framework and without publishing the details of the procedure. Zhang, however, said he went to Mexico where there were no rules and insisted doing so was morally right.
The baby’s mother carries genes for a genetic disease called Leigh syndrome, which harms the developing nervous system.
Zhang took out the nucleus from one of the woman’s ova and inserted it inot a healthy donor’s ovum that had had its own nucleus removed. He then fertilised the ovum with her husband’s sperm.Medical doctors hail world’s first ‘3 parent’ baby
