Is religious bigotry the only reason behind the lack of recognition accorded to Dr Salam?
Recently the 15th death anniversary of one of Pakistan’s greatest sons, the Nobel Laureate Dr Abdus Salam, passed away unnoticed. One often hears well-meaning voices and laments in the national media about how Pakistan cruelly and ungratefully refused to honour its only Nobel Prize recipient, just because he was from the Ahmadiyya community.
But is religious bigotry the only reason behind the lack of recognition accorded to Dr Salam? Pakistanis as a nation have a few iron-clad traditions that are rigorously followed come what may. The most prominent of these is to mistreat anyone who does any favour to this country.
Let’s take a look at some of the people who served Pakistan diligently and the way they were repaid by the nation.
Liaquat Ali Khan, who held the country together in the face of numerous threats and conspiracies, was murdered in front of thousands, with the incident remaining uninvestigated even after all these years. Former Prime Minister Feroze Khan Noon was one of the more prominent leaders of the freedom movement, who gave up his knighthood on Quaid-i-Azam’s orders. He helped increase Pakistan’s geographical boundaries by acquiring Gwadar. Till now no other civilian or military ruler has a similar achievement to his or her credit. Less than four weeks after Gwadar was added to Pakistan, his government was toppled by the guardians of the country’s geographical frontiers.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan’s first democratically-elected prime minister, who was the father of the country’s nuclear programme, the 1973 Constitution and the policy of building an indigenous defence manufacturing base, was sentenced to death in a trial where the judges’ personal prejudice against him was very obvious. Former Governor Sindh Hakeem Muhammad Said, whose services in the field of medicine and education are matchless, was assassinated in cold blood, with his murderers still at large over a decade after the incident.
So my advice to all compassionate souls, who lament the lack of recognition for Dr Salam’s achievements, is that it’s not just religious bigotry that afflicts Pakistan. We also suffer a genetic, in-born trait to turn on all benefactors with a vengeance. At least Dr Salam died a peaceful dea

Corruption and criminality run from the top down, with the political class constantly looting the national treasury and distorting economic policy for personal gain. Bank loans are granted largely on the basis of status and connections. The rich stash much of their money abroad in those willing western coffers, while exhibiting little inclination to repay their rupee borrowings. Pakistan’s recent history has been dominated by two families—the Bhuttos and the Sharifs—both merely tolerated by the military, the real power in the country. When it comes to economic destruction, there’s not a lot of difference among the three.
While Benazir Bhutto hated the generals for executing her father, Nawaz Sharif early on figured out that they held the real power in Pakistan. His father had established a foundry in 1939 and, together with six brothers, had struggled for years only to see their business nationalized by Ali Bhutto’s regime in 1972. This sealed decades of enmity between the Bhuttos and the Sharifs. Following the military coup and General Zia’s assumption of power, the business—Ittefaq—was returned to family hands in 1980.Nawaz Sharif became a director and cultivated relations with senior military officers. This led to his appointment as finance minister of Punjab and then election as chief minister of this most populous province in 1985. During the 1980s and early 1990s, given Sharif ’s political control of Punjab and eventual prime ministership of the country, Ittefaq Industries grew from its original single foundry into 30 businesses producing steel, sugar, paper, and textiles, with combined revenues of $400 million, making it one of the biggest private conglomerates in the nation. As in many other countries, when you control the political realm, you can get anything you want in the economic realm. With Lahore, the capital of Punjab, serving as the seat of the family’s power, one of the first things Sharif did upon becoming prime minister in 1990 was build his long-dreamed-of superhighway from there to the capital,Islamabad. Estimated to cost 8.5 billion rupees, the project went through two biddings. Daewoo of Korea, strengthening its proposals with midnight meetings, was the highest bidder both times, so obviously it won the contract and delivered the job at well over 20 billion rupees.
A new highway needs new cars. Sharif authorized importation of 50,000 vehicles duty free, reportedly costing the government $700 million in lost customs duties. Banks were forced to make loans for vehicle purchases to would-be taxi cab drivers upon receipt of a 10 percent deposit.Borrowers got their “Nawaz Sharif cabs,” and some 60 percent of them promptly defaulted. This left the banks with $500 million or so in unpaid loans. Vehicle dealers reportedly made a killing and expressed their appreciation in expected ways. Under Sharif, unpaid bank loans and massive tax evasion remained the favorite ways to get rich. Upon his loss of power the usurping government published a list of 322 of the largest loan defaulters, representing almost $3 billion out of $4 billion owed to banks. Sharif and his family were tagged for $60 million. The Ittefaq Group went bankrupt in 1993 when Sharif lost his premiership the first time. By then only three units in the group were operational, and loan defaults of the remaining companies totaled some 5.7 billion rupees, more than $100 million.
Like Bhutto, offshore companies have been linked to Sharif, three in the British Virgin Islands by the names of Nescoll, Nielson, and Shamrock and another in the Channel Islands known as Chandron Jersey Pvt. Ltd. Some of these entities allegedly were used to facilitate purchase of four rather grand flats on Park Lane in London, at various times occupied by Sharif family members. Reportedly, payment transfers were made to Banque Paribas en Suisse, which then instructed Sharif ’s offshore companies Nescoll and Nielson to purchase the four luxury suites. In her second term, Benazir Bhutto had Pakistan’s Federal Investigating Agency begin a probe into the financial affairs of Nawaz Sharif and his family. The probe was headed by Rehman Malik, deputy director general of the agency. Malik had fortified his reputation earlier by aiding in the arrest of Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. During Sharif ’s second term, the draft report of the investigation was suppressed, Malik was jailed for a year, and later reportedly survived an assassination attempt, after which he fled to London. The Malik report, five years in the making, was released in 1998, with explosive revelations: The records, including government documents, signed affidavits from Pakistani officials, bank files and property records, detail deals that Mr. Malik says benefited Mr. Sharif, his family and his political associates:
* At least $160 million pocketed from a contract to build a highway from Lahore, his home town, to Islamabad, the nation’s capital.
* At least $140 million in unsecured loans from Pakistan’s state banks.
* More than $60 million generated from government rebates on sugar exported by mills controlled by Mr. Sharif and his business associates.
* At least $58 million skimmed from inflated prices paid for imported wheat from the United States and Canada. In the wheat deal, Mr. Sharif ’s government paid prices far above market value to a private company owned by a close associate of his in Washington, the records show. Falsely inflated invoices for the wheat generated tens of millions of dollars in cash.
The report went on to state that “The extent and magnitude of this corruption is so staggering that it has put the very integrity of the country at stake.” In an interview, Malik added: “No other leader of Pakistan has taken that much money from the banks. There is no rule of law in Pakistan. It doesn’t exist.” What brought Sharif down in his second term was his attempt to acquire virtually dictatorial powers. In 1997 he rammed a bill through his compliant parliament requiring legislators to vote as their party leaders directed. In 1998 he introduced a bill to impose Sharia law (Muslim religious law) across Pakistan, with himself empowered to issue unilateral directives in the name of Islam. In 1999 he sought to sideline the army by replacing Chief of Staff Pervez Musharraf with a more pliable crony. He forgot the lessons he had learned in the 1980s: The army controls Pakistan and politicians are a nuisance. As Musharraf was returning from Sri Lanka, Sharif tried to sack him in midair and deny the Pakistan International Airways flight with 200 civilians on board landing rights in Karachi. Musharraf radioed from the aircraft through Dubai to his commander in Karachi, ordering him to seize the airport control tower, accomplished as the plane descended almost out of fuel. Musharraf turned the tables and completed his coup, and Sharif was jailed.
But Sharif had little to fear. This, after all, is Pakistan. Musharraf needed to consolidate his power with the generals, and Sharif knew details about the corruption of most of the brass. Obviously, it is better to tread lightly around the edges of your peer group’s own thievery. So Musharraf had Sharif probed, tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison, but then in 2000 exiled him to Saudi Arabia.Twenty-two containers of carpets and furniture followed, and, of course, his foreign accounts remained mostly intact. Ensconced in a glittering palace in Jeddah, he is described as looking “corpulent” amidst “opulent” surroundings. Reportedly, he and Benazir Bhutto even have an occasional telephone conversation, perhaps together lamenting how unfair life has become.

I’d love to see a few hands chopped off. Particularly of those keeping their wealth (stolen from Pakistan) in foreign countries. If that wasn’t enough then keep chopping other parts of their body off. And, if that wasn’t enough then the punishment must pass on to their next of kin – until all of the stolen wealth is brought back to Pakistan.

لاہور ( مریم حسین) پنجاب حکومت کے بڑوں کے کہنے پر لاہور میں بیس سالہ پرانے دودھ پلانٹ پر پولیس کے ذریعے قبضہ کرا نے کے بعد اب اس کے چیف ایگزیکٹو امیر بخاری کو پولیس اور انٹی کرپشن اسٹیبلشمنٹ کے اہلکاروں کے ذریعے بدترین تشدد کا نشانہ بنانے کا انکشاف ہوا ہے تاکہ شریف فیملی کے چنیوٹ میں شروع کیے گئےAnhara دودھ کے کاروبار کا دائرہ کار لاہور تک وسیع کیا جائے۔ ہلہ دودھ کی مارکیٹ میں موجودگی سے انہارا دودھ کو اپنی جگہ بنانے میں مشکل کا سامنا تھا کیونکہ ہلہ دودھ صرف ستر روپے فی لٹر مل رہا تھا جبکہ انہارا کا ریٹ نوے روپے فی لٹر بتایا جا رہا ہے۔
ٹاپ سٹوری آن لائن کو یہ کنفرم کیا گیا ہے کہ ادارہ کسان کے چیف ایگزیکٹو امیر بخاری کو سوموار کو گرفتار کر کے پہلے ایک رات لاہور کے ایک تھانے میں رکھا گیاجہاں ان پر تشدد کیا گیا اور پھر منگل کو انہیں انٹی کرپشن کے حوالے کیا گیا تاکہ ان سے اعترافی بیانات کرائے جائیں۔ اس کا مطلب اس ادارے کے ساتھ 1996 میں پنجاب حکومت کے کیے گئے ایک ایسے معاہدے کو ختم کرانا ہے جس کی مدت معیاد دو ہزار سولہ میں ختم ہونا ہے۔ پنجاب حکومت نے لاہور کا یہ سرکاری ملک پلانٹ ادارہ کسان کے ساتھ جوائنٹ وینچر کے طور پر کیا تھا جب اس ملک پلانٹ کا نقصان دس کروڑ روپے ہو چکا تھا۔ اب جب کہ ادارہ کسان اس ملک پلانٹ کو منافع میں چلا رہا تھا تو اچانک لاہور کے پلانٹ پر پولیس بھیج کر قبضہ کر لیا گیا اور اس کے ساتھ ہی کروڑں روپے کی مشینری جو کہ ادارہ کسان نے خود خریدی تھی اس پر بھی قبضہ کر لیا گیا۔
مختلف ذرائع سے اکھٹی کی گئی تفصیلات کے مطابق، ادارہ کسان 1984 میں پنجاب میں شروع کیا گیا تھا اور اس کا آغاز پاکستان کے مایہ ناز بیوروکریٹ اور ماہر زراعت ڈاکٹر ظفر الطاف نے کیا تھا جنہوں نے کسانوں کی فلاح اور بہتری کے لے کواپریٹو کا نعرہ مارا اور کسانوں کے لیے کام شروع کیا۔ اس سیکم کے تحت پنجاب کے کسانوں کو اکھٹا کیا گیا اور انہیں جانوروں سے متعلقہ بہت سارے فوائد دیے گئے۔ اس دروان پنجاب حکومت کا اپنا دودھ پلانٹ جو کہ لاہور کے والٹن روڈ پر واقع تھا وہ نقصان میں جانے لگا اور پتہ چلا کہ ایک وقت پر اس کا نقصان دس کروڑ روپے ہو چکا تھا۔ اس پر پنجاب حکومت نے ادارہ کسان کے ساتھ ایک لیز معاہدہ کیا جس کی میعاد بیس برس رکھی گئی تھی۔ اس معاہدے کے تحت ہلہ دودھ کی پیداوار شروع کی گئی اور لاہور میں لوگوں کو سستا دودھ ، گھی، دہی اور دیگر پروڈکٹس ملنا شروع ہو گئیں۔ منافع میں سے پنجاب حکومت کو بھی حصہ ملنے لگا۔
اس ادارے میں پنجاب حکومت کی طرف سے سیکرٹری فنانس اور سیکرٹری لائیو سٹاک اس ادارے کے بورڈ کے ممبر تھے تاکہ وہ اس کے کام پر نظر بھی رکھ سکیں اور حکومت کے مفادات کا خیال بھی۔ بہت جلد یہ ادارہ کامیابی سے چلنے لگا۔ اس دروان ہلہ دودھ نے پنجاب بھر میں کسانوں کی تنظمیں بنائیں اور ان سے دودھ خریدا جانے لگا اور لاہور میں مارکیٹ ہونے لگا۔ پنجاب میں 35000 دیہاتی خواتین کو ہلہ دودھ نے اپنی کواپریٹو کا ممبر بنایا اور ان سے نہ صرف دودھ خریدا جاتا تھا بلکہ انہیں آسان شرائط پر قرضے کی سہولت بھی دی جانے لگی۔ کسانوں کو ان کے جانوروں کی دیکھ بھال کے لیے بھی پروگرام شروع کیے گئے تاکہ زیادہ سے زیادہ دودھ پیدا کیا جا سکے۔ اس سے دیہاتی علاقوں میں کسانوں اور عورتوں کی کمائی میں خاطر خواہ اضافہ ہوا۔
اس دروان ہلہ دودھ کی کامیابی سے متاثر ہو کر فیڈرل حکومت نے بھی اپنے سرکاری دودھ پلانٹ کا معاہدہ ادارہ کسان کے ساتھ کیا اور یہاں بھی یہ کامیابی سے چلنا شروع ہوگیا۔
تاہم جب پنجاب میں نواز لیگ کی حکومت شروع ہوئی تو مسائل نے سر اٹھانا شروع کیا اور شریف فیملی نے خود دودھ کا کاروبار شروع کرنے کا منصوبہ بنایا اور پہلے مرحلے میں چنیوٹ میں دودھ کا پلانٹ حمزہ شہباز نے لگایا۔ اس سلسلے میں مدد لینے کے لیے حمزہ شہباز نے ہلہ دودھ لاہور پلانٹ کے دورے شروع کر دیے۔ حمزہ کا کہنا تھا کہ انہیں ٹیکنکل مدد کی ضرورت ہے جو اسے امیر بخاری نے فراہم کرنا شروع کر دی کہ وہ کس طرح چنیوٹ اور اس کے قریبی علاقوں میں اپنا دودھ کا کاروبار بہتر کر سکتے ہیں۔ اس دروان حمزہ شہباز کو یہ محسوس ہوا کہ کیوں نہ ہلہ دودھ ہی بند کرایا جائے اور پنجاب حکومت کی لیز ختم کرا دی جائے۔ حمزہ کو پتہ چلا کہ ادارہ کسان اور پنجاب حکومت کی لیز دو ہزار سولہ میں ختم ہو گی اور اس دروان اگر دو ہزار تیرہ میں انتخابات ہوتے ہیں تو کچھ علم نہیں ہے کہ کون جیتتا ہے۔ اس لیے فیصلہ کیاگیا کہ بہتر ہوگا کہ ابھی سے کچھ ایسا انتظام کیاجائے کہ سانپ بھی مر جائے اور لاٹھی بھی نہ ٹوٹے۔
اس دروان نواز لیگ کے ایم این اے سعد رفیق کی آنکھ ہلہ دودھ پلانٹ پر پڑی جہاں پندرہ ایکڑ زمین موجود تھی۔ انہوں نے پنجاب حکومت سے کہا کہ ہلہ دودھ کی لیز ختم کر کے اس کی جگہ کالج بنا دیا جائے۔ ہلہ دودھ انتظامیہ کی چیخ و پکار کے باوجود بھی اس پر پولیس بھیج کر قبضہ کر لیا اور ہلہ دودھ پلانٹ کوبند کر دیا گیا۔ ہلہ دودھ کی انتطامیہ نے لاہور ہائی کورٹ سے حکم امتناعی لے لیا تاہم اس کے باوجود بھی وہاں قبضہ پولیس کا رہا اور سعد رفیق نے زور شور سے وہاں کام شروع کرا دیا۔ یوں جہاں لاہور کے شہریوں کو دودھ سپلائی کیا جارہا تھا وہاں پولیس بیٹھ گئی۔
لاہور ملک پلانٹ کی کامیابی سے خوش ہو کر اس سے پہلے پچھلے سال پنجاب حکومت نے ادارہ کسان کے ساتھ ایک اور معاہدہ کیا کہ وہ ضلع لیہ میں بھی ملک پلانٹ شروع کرے اور اس سلسلے میں زراعت کے وزیر احمد علی اولکھ پیش پیش تھے۔ اس سلسلے میں لیہ میں پراجیکٹ پر کام شروع ہو گیا۔تاہم لیہ کے ڈپٹی کمشنر جاوید اقبال نے امیر بخاری کو کہا کہ پہلے ان کے بندے اس پراجیکٹ میں بھرتی کیے جائیں۔ تاہم اس دروان یہ پراجیکٹ تاخیر کا شکار ہونا شروع ہوگیا کیونکہ بیوروکریسی نے اس میں روڑے اٹکانا شروع کر دیے تھے۔
جب حمزہ شہباز نے ایک دفعہ فیصلہ کر لیا کہ انہوں نے لاہور میں بھی اپنے دودھ کی مارکیٹنگ کرنی ہے تو انہوں نے نے لیہ کے ایم پی اے قیصر مگسی سے ایک درخواست پہلے پولیس کو دلوائی اور پھر انٹی کرپشن لاہور میں ایک اور مقدمہ درج کرایا کہ لیہ کے پراجیکٹ میں بے ضابطیگیاں کی گئی ہیں۔ ان الزامات پر ادارہ کسان کے چیف ایگزیکٹو امیر بخاری کو پولیس نے گرفتار کر لیا۔ گرفتاری کے بعد اسے لاہور کے ایک تھانے میں رکھا گیا اور پوری رات اس پر تشدد ہوتا رہا۔ اس تشدد کا مقصد یہ تھا کہ کسی طرح اسے مجبور کیا جائے کہ وہ ہلہ دودھ کی مشینری اور دیگر سامان اور چیزوں سے دست بردار ہوجائے۔ اگلے دن اسے انٹی کرپشن کے حوالے کر دیا اور اب اس پر تشدد کیا جارہا تھا۔
جب لاہور میں متلعقہ تھانے سے رابطہ کیا گیا جہاں امیر بخاری کو رکھا گیا تھا تو انہوں نے تشدد کرنے سے انکار کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ انہیں منگل کو انٹی کرپشن والے اٹھا کر لے گئے تھے اور وہ اب ان کی تحویل میں ہیں۔
انٹی کرپشن کے ایک ذمہ دار افسر نے اس بات کی تصدیق کی کہ امیر بخاری ان کی حراست میں ہیں کیونکہ اس پر ہلہ دودھ لیہ پراجیکٹ میں کرپشن کے الزامات لگے ہیں اور وہ ان کی تفتیش کر رہے ہیں۔ انہوں نے اس بات سے انکار کیا کہ ان پر حمزہ شہباز کا کوئی دباؤ تھا۔
ہلہ دودھ کے ایک ترجمان نے بتایا کہ ان کے پلانٹ اور مشینری پر قبضہ ہو چکا تھا۔ انہوں نے یہ پلانٹ اور مشینری پندرہ برس قبل تین کروڑ روپے میں خریدی تھی اور آج مارکیٹ میں اس کی قیمت تیس کروڑ روپے تھی لہذا کچھ طاقتور لوگوں نے پہلے کالج کے نام پر اس زمین پر قبضہ کر لیا اور اب مشینری پر قبضہ کرنے کے لیے ان کے چیف ایگزیکٹو امیر بخاری پر جھوٹے مقدمے کر کے انہیں تھانے میں تشدد کا نشانہ بنا کر اعتراف جرم کرانے کی کوشش کی جارہی ہے۔

Corruption and criminality run from the top down, with the political class constantly looting the national treasury and distorting economic policy for personal gain. Bank loans are granted largely on the basis of status and connections. The rich stash much of their money abroad in those willing western coffers, while exhibiting little inclination to repay their rupee borrowings. Pakistan’s recent history has been dominated by two families—the Bhuttos and the Sharifs—both merely tolerated by the military, the real power in the country. When it comes to economic destruction, there’s not a lot of difference among the three.
While Benazir Bhutto hated the generals for executing her father, Nawaz Sharif early on figured out that they held the real power in Pakistan. His father had established a foundry in 1939 and, together with six brothers, had struggled for years only to see their business nationalized by Ali Bhutto’s regime in 1972. This sealed decades of enmity between the Bhuttos and the Sharifs. Following the military coup and General Zia’s assumption of power, the business—Ittefaq—was returned to family hands in 1980.Nawaz Sharif became a director and cultivated relations with senior military officers. This led to his appointment as finance minister of Punjab and then election as chief minister of this most populous province in 1985. During the 1980s and early 1990s, given Sharif ’s political control of Punjab and eventual prime ministership of the country, Ittefaq Industries grew from its original single foundry into 30 businesses producing steel, sugar, paper, and textiles, with combined revenues of $400 million, making it one of the biggest private conglomerates in the nation. As in many other countries, when you control the political realm, you can get anything you want in the economic realm. With Lahore, the capital of Punjab, serving as the seat of the family’s power, one of the first things Sharif did upon becoming prime minister in 1990 was build his long-dreamed-of superhighway from there to the capital,Islamabad. Estimated to cost 8.5 billion rupees, the project went through two biddings. Daewoo of Korea, strengthening its proposals with midnight meetings, was the highest bidder both times, so obviously it won the contract and delivered the job at well over 20 billion rupees.
A new highway needs new cars. Sharif authorized importation of 50,000 vehicles duty free, reportedly costing the government $700 million in lost customs duties. Banks were forced to make loans for vehicle purchases to would-be taxi cab drivers upon receipt of a 10 percent deposit.Borrowers got their “Nawaz Sharif cabs,” and some 60 percent of them promptly defaulted. This left the banks with $500 million or so in unpaid loans. Vehicle dealers reportedly made a killing and expressed their appreciation in expected ways. Under Sharif, unpaid bank loans and massive tax evasion remained the favorite ways to get rich. Upon his loss of power the usurping government published a list of 322 of the largest loan defaulters, representing almost $3 billion out of $4 billion owed to banks. Sharif and his family were tagged for $60 million. The Ittefaq Group went bankrupt in 1993 when Sharif lost his premiership the first time. By then only three units in the group were operational, and loan defaults of the remaining companies totaled some 5.7 billion rupees, more than $100 million.
Like Bhutto, offshore companies have been linked to Sharif, three in the British Virgin Islands by the names of Nescoll, Nielson, and Shamrock and another in the Channel Islands known as Chandron Jersey Pvt. Ltd. Some of these entities allegedly were used to facilitate purchase of four rather grand flats on Park Lane in London, at various times occupied by Sharif family members. Reportedly, payment transfers were made to Banque Paribas en Suisse, which then instructed Sharif ’s offshore companies Nescoll and Nielson to purchase the four luxury suites. In her second term, Benazir Bhutto had Pakistan’s Federal Investigating Agency begin a probe into the financial affairs of Nawaz Sharif and his family. The probe was headed by Rehman Malik, deputy director general of the agency. Malik had fortified his reputation earlier by aiding in the arrest of Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. During Sharif ’s second term, the draft report of the investigation was suppressed, Malik was jailed for a year, and later reportedly survived an assassination attempt, after which he fled to London. The Malik report, five years in the making, was released in 1998, with explosive revelations: The records, including government documents, signed affidavits from Pakistani officials, bank files and property records, detail deals that Mr. Malik says benefited Mr. Sharif, his family and his political associates:
* At least $160 million pocketed from a contract to build a highway from Lahore, his home town, to Islamabad, the nation’s capital.
* At least $140 million in unsecured loans from Pakistan’s state banks.
* More than $60 million generated from government rebates on sugar exported by mills controlled by Mr. Sharif and his business associates.
* At least $58 million skimmed from inflated prices paid for imported wheat from the United States and Canada. In the wheat deal, Mr. Sharif ’s government paid prices far above market value to a private company owned by a close associate of his in Washington, the records show. Falsely inflated invoices for the wheat generated tens of millions of dollars in cash.
The report went on to state that “The extent and magnitude of this corruption is so staggering that it has put the very integrity of the country at stake.” In an interview, Malik added: “No other leader of Pakistan has taken that much money from the banks. There is no rule of law in Pakistan. It doesn’t exist.” What brought Sharif down in his second term was his attempt to acquire virtually dictatorial powers. In 1997 he rammed a bill through his compliant parliament requiring legislators to vote as their party leaders directed. In 1998 he introduced a bill to impose Sharia law (Muslim religious law) across Pakistan, with himself empowered to issue unilateral directives in the name of Islam. In 1999 he sought to sideline the army by replacing Chief of Staff Pervez Musharraf with a more pliable crony. He forgot the lessons he had learned in the 1980s: The army controls Pakistan and politicians are a nuisance. As Musharraf was returning from Sri Lanka, Sharif tried to sack him in midair and deny the Pakistan International Airways flight with 200 civilians on board landing rights in Karachi. Musharraf radioed from the aircraft through Dubai to his commander in Karachi, ordering him to seize the airport control tower, accomplished as the plane descended almost out of fuel. Musharraf turned the tables and completed his coup, and Sharif was jailed.
But Sharif had little to fear. This, after all, is Pakistan. Musharraf needed to consolidate his power with the generals, and Sharif knew details about the corruption of most of the brass. Obviously, it is better to tread lightly around the edges of your peer group’s own thievery. So Musharraf had Sharif probed, tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison, but then in 2000 exiled him to Saudi Arabia.Twenty-two containers of carpets and furniture followed, and, of course, his foreign accounts remained mostly intact. Ensconced in a glittering palace in Jeddah, he is described as looking “corpulent” amidst “opulent” surroundings. Reportedly, he and Benazir Bhutto even have an occasional telephone conversation, perhaps together lamenting how unfair life has become.

Biography
He belonged to a small village called Pindori which is about 65 Kilometers away from Rawalpindi. He joined Pakistan Army as a cadet-officer and later inducted in Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers. He completed his B.Sc. in electrical engineering from the Pakistan Military Academy, and served in the civil projects of the Pakistan Army. He is known to present at the constructions of the dam and had supervised the various projects in punjab. His brother Lieutenant General Akhtar Hussain Malik was also an Army general and was himself a hero of 1965 war too. He retired from the Army after commanding the I Corps at Mangla.

During the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, Brigadier Abdul Ali Malik was commander of the 24th infantry brigade in the Sialkot-Phillurah-Chamb sector. At the start of the war, his brigade was ordered by the senior 15 division to defend the imaginary Indian attack at Jasser bridge. Even though, he was reluctant to move forward (because of the Indian comprehensive orders were caught on the Indian side of border) he was forced to take his command to Jasser sector. However, it later turned out that those orders were indeed true, and he was ordered to move back into the same position. It was at this time, that Pakistan Army tanks caught the Indian armoured brigade by surprise, and hence was commenced the largest tank battle after the World War II.

Nawaz and Co. went with public money in suitcases to live a luxury life in Saudi Arabia and left supporters in lurch. I quit PMLN at that time and I strongly believe that leaders should be bold and brave. I would prefer death over life in similar situation. And it is well said that leadership is the highest responsibility.

Is religious bigotry the only reason behind the lack of recognition accorded to Dr Salam?
Recently the 15th death anniversary of one of Pakistan’s greatest sons, the Nobel Laureate Dr Abdus Salam, passed away unnoticed. One often hears well-meaning voices and laments in the national media about how Pakistan cruelly and ungratefully refused to honour its only Nobel Prize recipient, just because he was from the Ahmadiyya community.
But is religious bigotry the only reason behind the lack of recognition accorded to Dr Salam? Pakistanis as a nation have a few iron-clad traditions that are rigorously followed come what may. The most prominent of these is to mistreat anyone who does any favour to this country.
Let’s take a look at some of the people who served Pakistan diligently and the way they were repaid by the nation.
Liaquat Ali Khan, who held the country together in the face of numerous threats and conspiracies, was murdered in front of thousands, with the incident remaining uninvestigated even after all these years. Former Prime Minister Feroze Khan Noon was one of the more prominent leaders of the freedom movement, who gave up his knighthood on Quaid-i-Azam’s orders. He helped increase Pakistan’s geographical boundaries by acquiring Gwadar. Till now no other civilian or military ruler has a similar achievement to his or her credit. Less than four weeks after Gwadar was added to Pakistan, his government was toppled by the guardians of the country’s geographical frontiers.
Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan’s first democratically-elected prime minister, who was the father of the country’s nuclear programme, the 1973 Constitution and the policy of building an indigenous defence manufacturing base, was sentenced to death in a trial where the judges’ personal prejudice against him was very obvious. Former Governor Sindh Hakeem Muhammad Said, whose services in the field of medicine and education are matchless, was assassinated in cold blood, with his murderers still at large over a decade after the incident.
So my advice to all compassionate souls, who lament the lack of recognition for Dr Salam’s achievements, is that it’s not just religious bigotry that afflicts Pakistan. We also suffer a genetic, in-born trait to turn on all benefactors with a vengeance. At least Dr Salam died a peaceful dea

Nawaz Sharif’s Corruption highlighted in Raymond Baker’s book on Dirty Money Raymond Baker in his book Capitalism’s Achilles Heel: Dirty Money and How to Renew the Free-Market System tried to understand the dynamics of how dirty money works.
Corruption and criminality run from the top down, with the political class constantly looting the national treasury and distorting economic policy for personal gain. Bank loans are granted largely on the basis of status and connections. The rich stash much of their money abroad in those willing western coffers, while exhibiting little inclination to repay their rupee borrowings. Pakistan’s recent history has been dominated by two families—the Bhuttos and the Sharifs—both merely tolerated by the military, the real power in the country. When it comes to economic destruction, there’s not a lot of difference among the three.
While Benazir Bhutto hated the generals for executing her father, Nawaz Sharif early on figured out that they held the real power in Pakistan. His father had established a foundry in 1939 and, together with six brothers, had struggled for years only to see their business nationalized by Ali Bhutto’s regime in 1972. This sealed decades of enmity between the Bhuttos and the Sharifs. Following the military coup and General Zia’s assumption of power, the business—Ittefaq—was returned to family hands in 1980.Nawaz Sharif became a director and cultivated relations with senior military officers. This led to his appointment as finance minister of Punjab and then election as chief minister of this most populous province in 1985. During the 1980s and early 1990s, given Sharif ’s political control of Punjab and eventual prime ministership of the country, Ittefaq Industries grew from its original single foundry into 30 businesses producing steel, sugar, paper, and textiles, with combined revenues of $400 million, making it one of the biggest private conglomerates in the nation. As in many other countries, when you control the political realm, you can get anything you want in the economic realm. With Lahore, the capital of Punjab, serving as the seat of the family’s power, one of the first things Sharif did upon becoming prime minister in 1990 was build his long-dreamed-of superhighway from there to the capital,Islamabad. Estimated to cost 8.5 billion rupees, the project went through two biddings. Daewoo of Korea, strengthening its proposals with midnight meetings, was the highest bidder both times, so obviously it won the contract and delivered the job at well over 20 billion rupees.
A new highway needs new cars. Sharif authorized importation of 50,000 vehicles duty free, reportedly costing the government $700 million in lost customs duties. Banks were forced to make loans for vehicle purchases to would-be taxi cab drivers upon receipt of a 10 percent deposit.Borrowers got their “Nawaz Sharif cabs,” and some 60 percent of them promptly defaulted. This left the banks with $500 million or so in unpaid loans. Vehicle dealers reportedly made a killing and expressed their appreciation in expected ways. Under Sharif, unpaid bank loans and massive tax evasion remained the favorite ways to get rich. Upon his loss of power the usurping government published a list of 322 of the largest loan defaulters, representing almost $3 billion out of $4 billion owed to banks. Sharif and his family were tagged for $60 million. The Ittefaq Group went bankrupt in 1993 when Sharif lost his premiership the first time. By then only three units in the group were operational, and loan defaults of the remaining companies totaled some 5.7 billion rupees, more than $100 million.
Like Bhutto, offshore companies have been linked to Sharif, three in the British Virgin Islands by the names of Nescoll, Nielson, and Shamrock and another in the Channel Islands known as Chandron Jersey Pvt. Ltd. Some of these entities allegedly were used to facilitate purchase of four rather grand flats on Park Lane in London, at various times occupied by Sharif family members. Reportedly, payment transfers were made to Banque Paribas en Suisse, which then instructed Sharif ’s offshore companies Nescoll and Nielson to purchase the four luxury suites. In her second term, Benazir Bhutto had Pakistan’s Federal Investigating Agency begin a probe into the financial affairs of Nawaz Sharif and his family. The probe was headed by Rehman Malik, deputy director general of the agency. Malik had fortified his reputation earlier by aiding in the arrest of Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. During Sharif ’s second term, the draft report of the investigation was suppressed, Malik was jailed for a year, and later reportedly survived an assassination attempt, after which he fled to London. The Malik report, five years in the making, was released in 1998, with explosive revelations: The records, including government documents, signed affidavits from Pakistani officials, bank files and property records, detail deals that Mr. Malik says benefited Mr. Sharif, his family and his political associates:
* At least $160 million pocketed from a contract to build a highway from Lahore, his home town, to Islamabad, the nation’s capital.
* At least $140 million in unsecured loans from Pakistan’s state banks.
* More than $60 million generated from government rebates on sugar exported by mills controlled by Mr. Sharif and his business associates.
* At least $58 million skimmed from inflated prices paid for imported wheat from the United States and Canada. In the wheat deal, Mr. Sharif ’s government paid prices far above market value to a private company owned by a close associate of his in Washington, the records show. Falsely inflated invoices for the wheat generated tens of millions of dollars in cash.
The report went on to state that “The extent and magnitude of this corruption is so staggering that it has put the very integrity of the country at stake.” In an interview, Malik added: “No other leader of Pakistan has taken that much money from the banks. There is no rule of law in Pakistan. It doesn’t exist.” What brought Sharif down in his second term was his attempt to acquire virtually dictatorial powers. In 1997 he rammed a bill through his compliant parliament requiring legislators to vote as their party leaders directed. In 1998 he introduced a bill to impose Sharia law (Muslim religious law) across Pakistan, with himself empowered to issue unilateral directives in the name of Islam. In 1999 he sought to sideline the army by replacing Chief of Staff Pervez Musharraf with a more pliable crony. He forgot the lessons he had learned in the 1980s: The army controls Pakistan and politicians are a nuisance. As Musharraf was returning from Sri Lanka, Sharif tried to sack him in midair and deny the Pakistan International Airways flight with 200 civilians on board landing rights in Karachi. Musharraf radioed from the aircraft through Dubai to his commander in Karachi, ordering him to seize the airport control tower, accomplished as the plane descended almost out of fuel. Musharraf turned the tables and completed his coup, and Sharif was jailed.
But Sharif had little to fear. This, after all, is Pakistan. Musharraf needed to consolidate his power with the generals, and Sharif knew details about the corruption of most of the brass. Obviously, it is better to tread lightly around the edges of your peer group’s own thievery. So Musharraf had Sharif probed, tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison, but then in 2000 exiled him to Saudi Arabia.Twenty-two containers of carpets and furniture followed, and, of course, his foreign accounts remained mostly intact. Ensconced in a glittering palace in Jeddah, he is described as looking “corpulent” amidst “opulent” surroundings. Reportedly, he and Benazir Bhutto even have an occasional telephone conversation, perhaps together lamenting how unfair life has become.

I’d love to see a few hands chopped off. Particularly of those keeping their wealth (stolen from Pakistan) in foreign countries. If that wasn’t enough then keep chopping other parts of their body off. And, if that wasn’t enough then the punishment must pass on to their next of kin – until all of the stolen wealth is brought back to Pakistan.

لاہوریوں کو ’شریف دودھ‘ پلانے کے لیے پولیس کا استعمال

لاہور ( مریم حسین) پنجاب حکومت کے بڑوں کے کہنے پر لاہور میں بیس سالہ پرانے دودھ پلانٹ پر پولیس کے ذریعے قبضہ کرا نے کے بعد اب اس کے چیف ایگزیکٹو امیر بخاری کو پولیس اور انٹی کرپشن اسٹیبلشمنٹ کے اہلکاروں کے ذریعے بدترین تشدد کا نشانہ بنانے کا انکشاف ہوا ہے تاکہ شریف فیملی کے چنیوٹ میں شروع کیے گئےAnhara دودھ کے کاروبار کا دائرہ کار لاہور تک وسیع کیا جائے۔ ہلہ دودھ کی مارکیٹ میں موجودگی سے انہارا دودھ کو اپنی جگہ بنانے میں مشکل کا سامنا تھا کیونکہ ہلہ دودھ صرف ستر روپے فی لٹر مل رہا تھا جبکہ انہارا کا ریٹ نوے روپے فی لٹر بتایا جا رہا ہے۔
ٹاپ سٹوری آن لائن کو یہ کنفرم کیا گیا ہے کہ ادارہ کسان کے چیف ایگزیکٹو امیر بخاری کو سوموار کو گرفتار کر کے پہلے ایک رات لاہور کے ایک تھانے میں رکھا گیاجہاں ان پر تشدد کیا گیا اور پھر منگل کو انہیں انٹی کرپشن کے حوالے کیا گیا تاکہ ان سے اعترافی بیانات کرائے جائیں۔ اس کا مطلب اس ادارے کے ساتھ 1996 میں پنجاب حکومت کے کیے گئے ایک ایسے معاہدے کو ختم کرانا ہے جس کی مدت معیاد دو ہزار سولہ میں ختم ہونا ہے۔ پنجاب حکومت نے لاہور کا یہ سرکاری ملک پلانٹ ادارہ کسان کے ساتھ جوائنٹ وینچر کے طور پر کیا تھا جب اس ملک پلانٹ کا نقصان دس کروڑ روپے ہو چکا تھا۔ اب جب کہ ادارہ کسان اس ملک پلانٹ کو منافع میں چلا رہا تھا تو اچانک لاہور کے پلانٹ پر پولیس بھیج کر قبضہ کر لیا گیا اور اس کے ساتھ ہی کروڑں روپے کی مشینری جو کہ ادارہ کسان نے خود خریدی تھی اس پر بھی قبضہ کر لیا گیا۔
مختلف ذرائع سے اکھٹی کی گئی تفصیلات کے مطابق، ادارہ کسان 1984 میں پنجاب میں شروع کیا گیا تھا اور اس کا آغاز پاکستان کے مایہ ناز بیوروکریٹ اور ماہر زراعت ڈاکٹر ظفر الطاف نے کیا تھا جنہوں نے کسانوں کی فلاح اور بہتری کے لے کواپریٹو کا نعرہ مارا اور کسانوں کے لیے کام شروع کیا۔ اس سیکم کے تحت پنجاب کے کسانوں کو اکھٹا کیا گیا اور انہیں جانوروں سے متعلقہ بہت سارے فوائد دیے گئے۔ اس دروان پنجاب حکومت کا اپنا دودھ پلانٹ جو کہ لاہور کے والٹن روڈ پر واقع تھا وہ نقصان میں جانے لگا اور پتہ چلا کہ ایک وقت پر اس کا نقصان دس کروڑ روپے ہو چکا تھا۔ اس پر پنجاب حکومت نے ادارہ کسان کے ساتھ ایک لیز معاہدہ کیا جس کی میعاد بیس برس رکھی گئی تھی۔ اس معاہدے کے تحت ہلہ دودھ کی پیداوار شروع کی گئی اور لاہور میں لوگوں کو سستا دودھ ، گھی، دہی اور دیگر پروڈکٹس ملنا شروع ہو گئیں۔ منافع میں سے پنجاب حکومت کو بھی حصہ ملنے لگا۔
اس ادارے میں پنجاب حکومت کی طرف سے سیکرٹری فنانس اور سیکرٹری لائیو سٹاک اس ادارے کے بورڈ کے ممبر تھے تاکہ وہ اس کے کام پر نظر بھی رکھ سکیں اور حکومت کے مفادات کا خیال بھی۔ بہت جلد یہ ادارہ کامیابی سے چلنے لگا۔ اس دروان ہلہ دودھ نے پنجاب بھر میں کسانوں کی تنظمیں بنائیں اور ان سے دودھ خریدا جانے لگا اور لاہور میں مارکیٹ ہونے لگا۔ پنجاب میں 35000 دیہاتی خواتین کو ہلہ دودھ نے اپنی کواپریٹو کا ممبر بنایا اور ان سے نہ صرف دودھ خریدا جاتا تھا بلکہ انہیں آسان شرائط پر قرضے کی سہولت بھی دی جانے لگی۔ کسانوں کو ان کے جانوروں کی دیکھ بھال کے لیے بھی پروگرام شروع کیے گئے تاکہ زیادہ سے زیادہ دودھ پیدا کیا جا سکے۔ اس سے دیہاتی علاقوں میں کسانوں اور عورتوں کی کمائی میں خاطر خواہ اضافہ ہوا۔
اس دروان ہلہ دودھ کی کامیابی سے متاثر ہو کر فیڈرل حکومت نے بھی اپنے سرکاری دودھ پلانٹ کا معاہدہ ادارہ کسان کے ساتھ کیا اور یہاں بھی یہ کامیابی سے چلنا شروع ہوگیا۔
تاہم جب پنجاب میں نواز لیگ کی حکومت شروع ہوئی تو مسائل نے سر اٹھانا شروع کیا اور شریف فیملی نے خود دودھ کا کاروبار شروع کرنے کا منصوبہ بنایا اور پہلے مرحلے میں چنیوٹ میں دودھ کا پلانٹ حمزہ شہباز نے لگایا۔ اس سلسلے میں مدد لینے کے لیے حمزہ شہباز نے ہلہ دودھ لاہور پلانٹ کے دورے شروع کر دیے۔ حمزہ کا کہنا تھا کہ انہیں ٹیکنکل مدد کی ضرورت ہے جو اسے امیر بخاری نے فراہم کرنا شروع کر دی کہ وہ کس طرح چنیوٹ اور اس کے قریبی علاقوں میں اپنا دودھ کا کاروبار بہتر کر سکتے ہیں۔ اس دروان حمزہ شہباز کو یہ محسوس ہوا کہ کیوں نہ ہلہ دودھ ہی بند کرایا جائے اور پنجاب حکومت کی لیز ختم کرا دی جائے۔ حمزہ کو پتہ چلا کہ ادارہ کسان اور پنجاب حکومت کی لیز دو ہزار سولہ میں ختم ہو گی اور اس دروان اگر دو ہزار تیرہ میں انتخابات ہوتے ہیں تو کچھ علم نہیں ہے کہ کون جیتتا ہے۔ اس لیے فیصلہ کیاگیا کہ بہتر ہوگا کہ ابھی سے کچھ ایسا انتظام کیاجائے کہ سانپ بھی مر جائے اور لاٹھی بھی نہ ٹوٹے۔
اس دروان نواز لیگ کے ایم این اے سعد رفیق کی آنکھ ہلہ دودھ پلانٹ پر پڑی جہاں پندرہ ایکڑ زمین موجود تھی۔ انہوں نے پنجاب حکومت سے کہا کہ ہلہ دودھ کی لیز ختم کر کے اس کی جگہ کالج بنا دیا جائے۔ ہلہ دودھ انتظامیہ کی چیخ و پکار کے باوجود بھی اس پر پولیس بھیج کر قبضہ کر لیا اور ہلہ دودھ پلانٹ کوبند کر دیا گیا۔ ہلہ دودھ کی انتطامیہ نے لاہور ہائی کورٹ سے حکم امتناعی لے لیا تاہم اس کے باوجود بھی وہاں قبضہ پولیس کا رہا اور سعد رفیق نے زور شور سے وہاں کام شروع کرا دیا۔ یوں جہاں لاہور کے شہریوں کو دودھ سپلائی کیا جارہا تھا وہاں پولیس بیٹھ گئی۔
لاہور ملک پلانٹ کی کامیابی سے خوش ہو کر اس سے پہلے پچھلے سال پنجاب حکومت نے ادارہ کسان کے ساتھ ایک اور معاہدہ کیا کہ وہ ضلع لیہ میں بھی ملک پلانٹ شروع کرے اور اس سلسلے میں زراعت کے وزیر احمد علی اولکھ پیش پیش تھے۔ اس سلسلے میں لیہ میں پراجیکٹ پر کام شروع ہو گیا۔تاہم لیہ کے ڈپٹی کمشنر جاوید اقبال نے امیر بخاری کو کہا کہ پہلے ان کے بندے اس پراجیکٹ میں بھرتی کیے جائیں۔ تاہم اس دروان یہ پراجیکٹ تاخیر کا شکار ہونا شروع ہوگیا کیونکہ بیوروکریسی نے اس میں روڑے اٹکانا شروع کر دیے تھے۔
جب حمزہ شہباز نے ایک دفعہ فیصلہ کر لیا کہ انہوں نے لاہور میں بھی اپنے دودھ کی مارکیٹنگ کرنی ہے تو انہوں نے نے لیہ کے ایم پی اے قیصر مگسی سے ایک درخواست پہلے پولیس کو دلوائی اور پھر انٹی کرپشن لاہور میں ایک اور مقدمہ درج کرایا کہ لیہ کے پراجیکٹ میں بے ضابطیگیاں کی گئی ہیں۔ ان الزامات پر ادارہ کسان کے چیف ایگزیکٹو امیر بخاری کو پولیس نے گرفتار کر لیا۔ گرفتاری کے بعد اسے لاہور کے ایک تھانے میں رکھا گیا اور پوری رات اس پر تشدد ہوتا رہا۔ اس تشدد کا مقصد یہ تھا کہ کسی طرح اسے مجبور کیا جائے کہ وہ ہلہ دودھ کی مشینری اور دیگر سامان اور چیزوں سے دست بردار ہوجائے۔ اگلے دن اسے انٹی کرپشن کے حوالے کر دیا اور اب اس پر تشدد کیا جارہا تھا۔
جب لاہور میں متلعقہ تھانے سے رابطہ کیا گیا جہاں امیر بخاری کو رکھا گیا تھا تو انہوں نے تشدد کرنے سے انکار کرتے ہوئے کہا کہ انہیں منگل کو انٹی کرپشن والے اٹھا کر لے گئے تھے اور وہ اب ان کی تحویل میں ہیں۔
انٹی کرپشن کے ایک ذمہ دار افسر نے اس بات کی تصدیق کی کہ امیر بخاری ان کی حراست میں ہیں کیونکہ اس پر ہلہ دودھ لیہ پراجیکٹ میں کرپشن کے الزامات لگے ہیں اور وہ ان کی تفتیش کر رہے ہیں۔ انہوں نے اس بات سے انکار کیا کہ ان پر حمزہ شہباز کا کوئی دباؤ تھا۔
ہلہ دودھ کے ایک ترجمان نے بتایا کہ ان کے پلانٹ اور مشینری پر قبضہ ہو چکا تھا۔ انہوں نے یہ پلانٹ اور مشینری پندرہ برس قبل تین کروڑ روپے میں خریدی تھی اور آج مارکیٹ میں اس کی قیمت تیس کروڑ روپے تھی لہذا کچھ طاقتور لوگوں نے پہلے کالج کے نام پر اس زمین پر قبضہ کر لیا اور اب مشینری پر قبضہ کرنے کے لیے ان کے چیف ایگزیکٹو امیر بخاری پر جھوٹے مقدمے کر کے انہیں تھانے میں تشدد کا نشانہ بنا کر اعتراف جرم کرانے کی کوشش کی جارہی ہے۔

Nawaz Sharif’s Corruption highlighted in Raymond Baker’s book on Dirty Money Raymond Baker in his book Capitalism’s Achilles Heel: Dirty Money and How to Renew the Free-Market System tried to understand the dynamics of how dirty money works.
Corruption and criminality run from the top down, with the political class constantly looting the national treasury and distorting economic policy for personal gain. Bank loans are granted largely on the basis of status and connections. The rich stash much of their money abroad in those willing western coffers, while exhibiting little inclination to repay their rupee borrowings. Pakistan’s recent history has been dominated by two families—the Bhuttos and the Sharifs—both merely tolerated by the military, the real power in the country. When it comes to economic destruction, there’s not a lot of difference among the three.
While Benazir Bhutto hated the generals for executing her father, Nawaz Sharif early on figured out that they held the real power in Pakistan. His father had established a foundry in 1939 and, together with six brothers, had struggled for years only to see their business nationalized by Ali Bhutto’s regime in 1972. This sealed decades of enmity between the Bhuttos and the Sharifs. Following the military coup and General Zia’s assumption of power, the business—Ittefaq—was returned to family hands in 1980.Nawaz Sharif became a director and cultivated relations with senior military officers. This led to his appointment as finance minister of Punjab and then election as chief minister of this most populous province in 1985. During the 1980s and early 1990s, given Sharif ’s political control of Punjab and eventual prime ministership of the country, Ittefaq Industries grew from its original single foundry into 30 businesses producing steel, sugar, paper, and textiles, with combined revenues of $400 million, making it one of the biggest private conglomerates in the nation. As in many other countries, when you control the political realm, you can get anything you want in the economic realm. With Lahore, the capital of Punjab, serving as the seat of the family’s power, one of the first things Sharif did upon becoming prime minister in 1990 was build his long-dreamed-of superhighway from there to the capital,Islamabad. Estimated to cost 8.5 billion rupees, the project went through two biddings. Daewoo of Korea, strengthening its proposals with midnight meetings, was the highest bidder both times, so obviously it won the contract and delivered the job at well over 20 billion rupees.
A new highway needs new cars. Sharif authorized importation of 50,000 vehicles duty free, reportedly costing the government $700 million in lost customs duties. Banks were forced to make loans for vehicle purchases to would-be taxi cab drivers upon receipt of a 10 percent deposit.Borrowers got their “Nawaz Sharif cabs,” and some 60 percent of them promptly defaulted. This left the banks with $500 million or so in unpaid loans. Vehicle dealers reportedly made a killing and expressed their appreciation in expected ways. Under Sharif, unpaid bank loans and massive tax evasion remained the favorite ways to get rich. Upon his loss of power the usurping government published a list of 322 of the largest loan defaulters, representing almost $3 billion out of $4 billion owed to banks. Sharif and his family were tagged for $60 million. The Ittefaq Group went bankrupt in 1993 when Sharif lost his premiership the first time. By then only three units in the group were operational, and loan defaults of the remaining companies totaled some 5.7 billion rupees, more than $100 million.
Like Bhutto, offshore companies have been linked to Sharif, three in the British Virgin Islands by the names of Nescoll, Nielson, and Shamrock and another in the Channel Islands known as Chandron Jersey Pvt. Ltd. Some of these entities allegedly were used to facilitate purchase of four rather grand flats on Park Lane in London, at various times occupied by Sharif family members. Reportedly, payment transfers were made to Banque Paribas en Suisse, which then instructed Sharif ’s offshore companies Nescoll and Nielson to purchase the four luxury suites. In her second term, Benazir Bhutto had Pakistan’s Federal Investigating Agency begin a probe into the financial affairs of Nawaz Sharif and his family. The probe was headed by Rehman Malik, deputy director general of the agency. Malik had fortified his reputation earlier by aiding in the arrest of Ramzi Yousef, mastermind of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. During Sharif ’s second term, the draft report of the investigation was suppressed, Malik was jailed for a year, and later reportedly survived an assassination attempt, after which he fled to London. The Malik report, five years in the making, was released in 1998, with explosive revelations: The records, including government documents, signed affidavits from Pakistani officials, bank files and property records, detail deals that Mr. Malik says benefited Mr. Sharif, his family and his political associates:
* At least $160 million pocketed from a contract to build a highway from Lahore, his home town, to Islamabad, the nation’s capital.
* At least $140 million in unsecured loans from Pakistan’s state banks.
* More than $60 million generated from government rebates on sugar exported by mills controlled by Mr. Sharif and his business associates.
* At least $58 million skimmed from inflated prices paid for imported wheat from the United States and Canada. In the wheat deal, Mr. Sharif ’s government paid prices far above market value to a private company owned by a close associate of his in Washington, the records show. Falsely inflated invoices for the wheat generated tens of millions of dollars in cash.
The report went on to state that “The extent and magnitude of this corruption is so staggering that it has put the very integrity of the country at stake.” In an interview, Malik added: “No other leader of Pakistan has taken that much money from the banks. There is no rule of law in Pakistan. It doesn’t exist.” What brought Sharif down in his second term was his attempt to acquire virtually dictatorial powers. In 1997 he rammed a bill through his compliant parliament requiring legislators to vote as their party leaders directed. In 1998 he introduced a bill to impose Sharia law (Muslim religious law) across Pakistan, with himself empowered to issue unilateral directives in the name of Islam. In 1999 he sought to sideline the army by replacing Chief of Staff Pervez Musharraf with a more pliable crony. He forgot the lessons he had learned in the 1980s: The army controls Pakistan and politicians are a nuisance. As Musharraf was returning from Sri Lanka, Sharif tried to sack him in midair and deny the Pakistan International Airways flight with 200 civilians on board landing rights in Karachi. Musharraf radioed from the aircraft through Dubai to his commander in Karachi, ordering him to seize the airport control tower, accomplished as the plane descended almost out of fuel. Musharraf turned the tables and completed his coup, and Sharif was jailed.
But Sharif had little to fear. This, after all, is Pakistan. Musharraf needed to consolidate his power with the generals, and Sharif knew details about the corruption of most of the brass. Obviously, it is better to tread lightly around the edges of your peer group’s own thievery. So Musharraf had Sharif probed, tried, convicted, and sentenced to life in prison, but then in 2000 exiled him to Saudi Arabia.Twenty-two containers of carpets and furniture followed, and, of course, his foreign accounts remained mostly intact. Ensconced in a glittering palace in Jeddah, he is described as looking “corpulent” amidst “opulent” surroundings. Reportedly, he and Benazir Bhutto even have an occasional telephone conversation, perhaps together lamenting how unfair life has become.

Lieutenant General Abdul Ali Malik was a Pakistan Army engineer officer and a high-ranking military general. He is a well-known figure from the Chawinda tank battle during the 1965 Indo-Pakistani war and a member of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Biography
He belonged to a small village called Pindori which is about 65 Kilometers away from Rawalpindi. He joined Pakistan Army as a cadet-officer and later inducted in Pakistan Army Corps of Engineers. He completed his B.Sc. in electrical engineering from the Pakistan Military Academy, and served in the civil projects of the Pakistan Army. He is known to present at the constructions of the dam and had supervised the various projects in punjab. His brother Lieutenant General Akhtar Hussain Malik was also an Army general and was himself a hero of 1965 war too. He retired from the Army after commanding the I Corps at Mangla.
1965 war
During the Indo-Pakistan War of 1965, Brigadier Abdul Ali Malik was commander of the 24th infantry brigade in the Sialkot-Phillurah-Chamb sector. At the start of the war, his brigade was ordered by the senior 15 division to defend the imaginary Indian attack at Jasser bridge. Even though, he was reluctant to move forward (because of the Indian comprehensive orders were caught on the Indian side of border) he was forced to take his command to Jasser sector. However, it later turned out that those orders were indeed true, and he was ordered to move back into the same position. It was at this time, that Pakistan Army tanks caught the Indian armoured brigade by surprise, and hence was commenced the largest tank battle after the World War II.

Now promoted Major General Abdul Ali Malik commanded the 8th Infantry Division in the western sector of 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. His troops were stationed in the Sialkot sector, and apart from some skirmishes, a major all-out war didn't happen[citation needed].

Nawaz and Co. went with public money in suitcases to live a luxury life in Saudi Arabia and left supporters in lurch. I quit PMLN at that time and I strongly believe that leaders should be bold and brave. I would prefer death over life in similar situation. And it is well said that leadership is the highest responsibility.
I will not say much because I don't want to curse a party leader that whom I don't want to relate anymore. I believe everyone knows how strong are Shareef at heart.
